Otto Froitzheim (German pronunciation: [ɔto fʀøːtshaɪ̯m]; 24 April 1884 – 27 October 1962) was a German tennis player. He won the singles and doubles titles at the World Hard Court Championships in 1912. He also won an Olympic Silver medal in singles in 1908 and was a finalist at Wimbledon in 1914.
Jorge F. Chavez (born November 25, 1961, in Callao, Peru) is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing.
Chavez began his career in horse racing in 1982 in his native Peru and by 1987 was his country's leading rider. In April 1988 he emigrated to the United States where he raced with a great deal of success at Florida race tracks. Moving to New York a few years later, Chavez was the leading rider on the NYRA circuit from 1994 to 1999. During this time he rose to national prominence. He won two of the 1999 Breeders' Cup races, taking both the Distaff and the Sprint. During the year Chavez also won the Cigar Mile Handicap [for the second time in his career]. As a result of his stellar year, Chavez won the 1999 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey. A fan favorite on the New York circuit where he rode for many years, Chavez is affectionately referred to by the fans as "Chop Chop" due to his distinctive riding style. His riding style, specifically how he uses the "whip, appears to be somewhat aggressive. However, this is more a byproduct of Chavez having short arms, due to his height [reportedly 4' 10], as opposed to him being overly aggressive."In 2000, he was voted the Mike Venezia Memorial Award winner for "extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship".
In 2001, Chavez rode Monarchos to victory in the Florida Derby and then in America's most prestigious race, the Kentucky Derby. The following year he won the Woodward Stakes, however, his career started to slow after suffering a broken back in a spill in the 2003 running of the Florida Derby.
As of mid-summer 2006, Chavez had been riding on the competitive Southern California racing circuit which includes Hollywood Park, Santa Anita Park and Del Mar Racetrack. In 2007, Chavez returned to New York to compete at Saratoga Race Course for the summer meet. After the Saratoga meet, Chavez returned to Belmont to ride. He has since been riding in both New York and Florida.
On December 4, 2011, Chavez suffered a catastrophic injury while riding on the 9th race at Aqueduct. This accident unlike previous ones would become career ending. Chavez is now retired, living in Long Island with his family. He is an avid golfer and loving Grandpa.
In 2024, Chavez was officially nominated for induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
Dean Henry Detton (June 27, 1908 – February 23, 1958) was an American professional wrestler and World Heavyweight Champion who was active in the early portion of the twentieth century. Previously he was a proficient University of Utah football player. Detton was born in Richmond, Utah and raised Mormon. He retired from wrestling in 1951 and then ran a bar, The Turf Club, where he eventually hanged himself to death. For his last 14 years he had lived in Hayward, California.
Willy Røgeberg (1 December 1905 – 15 December 1969) was a Norwegian rifle shooter who competed before and after World War II. He won two Olympic medals. He won his first olympic medal in 50 m Rifle, prone at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. After the war he won a bronze medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, this time in 300 m Rifle, Three positions. He also won several medals in the ISSF World Shooting Championships.After his Olympic medal in 1936 he started his own guns and sporting equipment business in Oslo.
During the Second World War German occupation of Norway, Røgeberg was arrested by the Germans on 29 May 1942 on weapons related charges. He spent the period 29 May – 5 October 1942 incarcerated at Møllergata 19, then 5 October 1942 to 22 December 1943 as prisoner no. 4776 at Grini concentration camp.
Erling Asbjørn Kongshaug (22 March 1915 – 14 September 1993) was a Norwegian rifle shooter. He competed in the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics in 50 meter rifle three positions and 50 meter rifle prone and won a gold medal in the three positions event in 1952. He also won 13 medals at the ISSF World Shooting Championships from 1947 to 1954.
Seymon Deutsch (May 18, 1935 – June 12, 2013) was an American bridge player. He started playing bridge as a student at the Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, alongside Bobby Wolff, but afterwards focused on a career in business. He returned to competitive bridge in 1980s, when he started gaining successes, which include titles in Grand National Teams (1986), the Spingold Knockout Teams (1991) and three Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1994, 1996 and 2006). He won two world titles: the 1988 World Team Olympiad in Venice and 1994 Rosenblum Cup. Deutsch was 2007 recipient of Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award. ACBL Hall of Fame player Zia Mahmood told The New York Times at the time, "There are a few people about whom never a bad word is said ... Seymon is one of them".Deutsch was born and spent most of his life in Laredo, Texas. He ran a fashion store chain, Joe Brand, as well as a cattle ranch with large operation in South Texas. He was survived by his wife Linda née Brand and their four children.
Laila Schou Nilsen (18 March 1919 – 30 July 1998) was one of the foremost Norwegian sportspeople of the 20th century, best known as a speed skater, alpine skier, and tennis player. She was one of the pioneers in women's speed skating, both in Norway and internationally, along with two other skaters from the Oslo Skøiteklub ('Oslo Skating Club'), Undis Blikken and Synnøve Lie. Across her sporting career – which also included handball, ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and motorsport – Nilsen won 101 Norwegian Championship titles, of which 86 were in tennis.
