She is a former world record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke (long course).Beard's success has earned her the American Swimmer of the Year Award twice. She has won a total of twenty-one medals in major international competition, five gold, thirteen silver, and three bronze spanning the Olympics, the World Championships, the Pan Pacific Championships, and the Summer Universiade.

Maiola_Kalili

Maiola Kalili (November 3, 1909 – August 23, 1972) was an American competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Kailili received a silver medal as a member of the second-place U.S. team in the men's 4×200-meter freestyle relay, together with teammates Frank Booth, George Fissler and Manuella Kalili, who was also his younger brother.

After 2008, she worked as a researcher at the University of California at Davis, studying the physiology and behavior of bird migration. She previously taught and performed research at the University of Washington in Seattle.
