Edwin Muir CBE (15 May 1887 – 3 January 1959) was a Scottish poet, novelist and translator. Born on a farm in Deerness, a parish of Orkney, Scotland, he is remembered for his deeply felt and vivid poetry written in plain language and with few stylistic preoccupations.
Norman Alexander MacCaig DLitt (14 November 1910 – 23 January 1996) was a Scottish poet and teacher. His poetry, in modern English, is known for its humour, simplicity of language and great popularity.
Sir Kenneth Charles Calman, HonFAcadMEd (born 25 December 1941) is a Scottish doctor and academic who formerly worked as a surgeon, oncologist and cancer researcher and held the position of Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, and then England. He was Warden and Vice-Chancellor of Durham University from 1998 to 2006 before becoming Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. He held the position of Chair of the National Cancer Research Institute from 2008 until 2011. From 2008 to 2009, he was convener of the Calman Commission on Scottish devolution.
Kirsteen Anne "Kirsty" Wark FRSE (born 3 February 1955) is a Scottish television presenter with a long career at the BBC.
Starting on Radio Scotland, where she became a producer, Wark switched to television, presenting The Late Show and Newsnight, as well as hosting her own interview programme and launching a production company. Her activities have included reporting on the Lockerbie bombings, hosting a book quiz and encouraging open discussion of menopause. In The Great British Bake Off, she qualified as Star Baker.
Wark's powerful, searching interview style and perceived closeness to Labour Party figures have provoked controversy. She was named journalist of the year by BAFTA Scotland in 1993 and Best Television Presenter in 1997.
Pierre Amoyal (born 22 June 1949 in Paris) is a French violinist and is the artistic director of the Conservatory of Lausanne.
He owns the "Kochanski" Stradivarius of 1717. It was stolen from him in 1987 and recovered in 1991.
Giovanni Pettenella (28 March 1943 – 19 February 2010) was an Italian track cyclist. At the 1964 Summer Olympics he won a gold medal in the sprint and a silver in the 1000 m time trial. In the semi-final of the 1,000 metres sprint Pettenella and Pierre Trentin set an Olympic record for standing still - 21 minutes and 57 seconds. After that he turned professional and competed until 1975. In 1968 he won a bronze medal in the sprint at the world championships.
He died in Milan, Italy, and is buried at the city's Monumental Cemetery.
Dennis Andrew Canavan (born 8 August 1942) is a Scottish politician. He was the Member of Parliament for Falkirk West from 1974 to 2000 (known as West Stirlingshire from 1974 to 1983), first as a member of the Labour Party, and then as an Independent. He then served as an Independent Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Falkirk West from 1999 to 2007.
In 2014, he was the chair of the Advisory Board of Yes Scotland, the campaign for independence in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
