William Jesse Shirley (July 6, 1921 – August 27, 1989) was an American actor and tenor/lyric baritone singer who later became a Broadway theatre producer. He is perhaps best known as the speaking and singing voice of Prince Phillip in Walt Disney's 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty and for dubbing Jeremy Brett's singing voice in the 1964 film version of My Fair Lady.
Billy Lee (William Lee Schlensker) (March 12, 1929 – November 17, 1989) was a child actor who appeared in many films from the mid-1930s through the early 1940s. He is probably best remembered for his performance in The Biscuit Eater.Lee's first role was in the Our Gang comedy short Mike Fright as a tap dancer in a sailor suit. He was signed under contract with Paramount Pictures from 1934 to 1941 and his first significant role was in Wagon Wheels when he was just four years old.
Lee continued acting throughout the 1930s, appearing in a number of movies (among others: Too Many Parents, Easy to Take, Three Cheers for Love, Silk Hat Kid, The Big Broadcast of 1937, Sons of the Legion, Say It in French, Boy Trouble, Night Work, Sudden Money, Nobody's Children, Hold Back the Dawn, Nevada City, Road to Happiness) and working alongside some of Hollywood's finest, including, Donald O'Connor, Lon Chaney Jr., Roy Rogers, Charles Boyer, Randolph Scott, Lew Ayres, Gene Autry, Robert Cummings, Basil Rathbone, Olivia de Havilland, John Boles, Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland and Broderick Crawford). He also did the voice of "The Boy" character in the animated portion of the Disney film, The Reluctant Dragon.In addition to being an actor, he was also a singer and dancer, appearing and singing with Bobby Breen in Make a Wish and touring with vaudeville shows. For his role in Cocoanut Grove he learnt to play the drums and formed the Billy Lee Band. The band appeared in the 1941 film, Reg'lar Fellers, in which he starred with co-star Carl Switzer.
Lee retired from film in 1943 after his last film War Dogs.Lee died on November 17, 1989, of a sudden heart attack.
Lisel Haas (1898–1989) was a German photographer. She worked as a photographer at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre where she photographed many plays. She obtained work with the theatre in 1940, photographing almost every production until she left Birmingham in 1962. During this time many promising actors appeared including Paul Scofield, Albert Finney, Ian Richardson and Derek Jacobi. She also covered productions at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham, the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and the Kidderminster Playhouse. After the Second World War she was able to set up her own photographic studio at her home in Moseley. She worked from here until she left Birmingham.
Robert A. Trias (March 18, 1923 – July 11, 1989) was an American karate pioneer, founding the first karate school in the mainland United States and becoming one of the first known American black belts. He also developed Shuri-ryū karate, an eclectic style with roots in Chinese kung-fu, and indirectly some Okinawan karate.
Carl Thorp (1912–1989) was an American artist who became known for Impressionist landscapes of California, sometimes referred to as California Scene Painting, as well as New York City, Boston and New Orleans Cityscapes. He was born in Lubbock, Texas on November 14, 1912.
According to a friend, Carl knew in his early teens he wanted art to be his path in life. But his father was not very amused by Carl’s interest and only bought him black and white oil paints. Perhaps this was his father’s attempt to discourage Carl. At the age of 16 Carl left home heading for San Diego, California. There he studied at the San Diego State College, and the Academy of Fine Arts (1932-1935) under Maurice Braun and Alfred R. Mitchell.
In the 1950s he organized art schools throughout California and was the Director at the Art center on Lombard street2 and oil painting instructor at Peninsula Arts & Crafts, School of Fine Arts in the mid-1950s.In the late 1950s Thorp moved to Louisiana where he lived part-time for most of his career and eventually died. According to the Biloxi Daily Herald March 22, 1970, Carl had a studio at 809 Bourbon St. in New Orleans.Carl frequently traveled up the coast to New York, and Massachusetts and many of his paintings contain subject matter from these locals.
