Hugo_Spatz

Hugo Spatz (2 September 1888 – 27 January 1969) was a German neuropathologist. In 1937, he was appointed director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research. He was a member of the Nazi Party, and admitted to knowingly performing much of his controversial research on the brains of executed prisoners. Along with Julius Hallervorden, he is credited with the discovery of Hallervorden-Spatz syndrome (now referred to as Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration). Hugo Spatz's Oberarzt (senior resident or attending physician), 1937–1939, Richard Lindenberg, became chief neuropathologist of the State of Maryland.

Theodor_Rumpel_(surgeon)

Theodor Rumpel (25 March 1862, Gütersloh – 11 August 1923, Hamburg) was a German surgeon remembered for describing the Rumpel-Leede sign.
He received his doctorate in 1887 in Marburg and worked at the Hamburg-Eppendorf Hospital. He oversaw the building of the Barmbecker Krankenhaus in Hamburg, of which he became director in 1913. Among his better known assistants at Hamburg was bacteriologist Georg Jochmann.With internist Alfred Kast, he was co-author of a patho-anatomical atlas titled: Pathologisch-anatomische Tafeln nach frischen Präparaten mit erläuterndem anatomisch-klinischem Text.

Maximilian_Oberst

Maximilian Oberst (October 6, 1849 – November 18, 1925) was a German physician and surgeon born in Regensburg.
He studied medicine in Munich, and from 1874 to 1877 was an assistant in the surgical department at a hospital in Augsburg. From 1877 he worked as an assistant to Richard von Volkmann at Halle, obtaining his habilitation in 1881. In 1884 became an assistant professor at the University of Halle, and from 1894 to 1920 was director and chief physician at the Krankenhaus Bergmannstrost in Halle. In 1919 he attained the title of professor ordinarius (full professor).
He is credited for introducing a method of block anesthesia ("Oberst-block") for use in minor surgery of the finger. In 1882 he published Die Amputationen unter dem Einflusse der antiseptischen Behandlung ("Amputations under the influence of antiseptic treatment").

Carl_von_Noorden_(pathologist)

Karl Harko von Noorden (13 September 1858 – 26 October 1944) was a German internist, born in Bonn and educated in medicine at Tübingen, Freiberg, and Leipzig (M.D., 1882).
In 1885 he was admitted as privatdocent to the medical facility of the University of Giessen, where he had been assistant in the medical clinic since 1883. In 1889 he became first assistant of the medical clinic at Berlin University, in 1894 was called to Frankfurt am Main as physician in charge of the municipal hospital, and in 1906 was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Vienna, as a successor to Carl Nothnagel.
Von Noorden made special researches involving albuminuria in health, metabolism disorders and its treatment, diabetes, diseases of the kidney, dietetics, etc., and wrote on these subjects, some of his books appearing in English. Among his assistants was the Austrian-American psychologist Rudolf von Urban.
Noorden advocated an "oat-cure" to treat diabetes. The diet "consisted of 250 gm. oatmeal a day - 80 gm. with about 0.4 liter water each meal and maybe some vegetables or fruits for the taste"He died in Vienna. His father, also named Carl von Noorden (1833–1883) was a noted historian.

Hermann_Lossen

Hermann Friedrich Lossen (7 November 1842 – 27 August 1909) was a German surgeon born in Emmershäuser Hütte, Hesse.
He studied under Carl von Voit (Munich), Friedrich Daniel von Recklinghausen (Würzburg), Bernhard von Langenbeck (Berlin) and Theodor Billroth (Vienna), earning his medical doctorate in 1866 from the University of Würzburg. In addition he served as an assistant to Richard von Volkmann at the University of Halle and to Gustav Simon at the University of Heidelberg. In 1866 he became habilitated for surgery at Heidelberg, where in 1874 he was appointed associate professor.

Otto_Michael_Ludwig_Leichtenstern

Otto Michael Ludwig Leichtenstern (14 October 1845 – 23 February 1900) was a German internist born in Ingolstadt.
In 1869 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich, later working as an assistant of clinical medicine in Munich under Karl von Pfeufer (1806–1869) and Joseph von Lindwurm (1824–1874). After the death of Felix von Niemeyer (1820–1871), he served as interim head of the medical clinic in Tübingen prior to the appointment of Carl von Liebermeister (1833–1901) as Niemeyer's permanent replacement. Leichtenstern remained at the Tübingen clinic for several years, afterwards serving as head physician of internal medicine at the city hospital in Cologne (1879–1900).
Leichtenstern is remembered for publishing articles on almost every facet of medicine. In the field of helminthology, he made contributions in his investigations of hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale).In 1898 he suspected that the compound 2-naphthylamine (2-NA) was involved in human bladder tumorigenesis. With Adolph Strümpell (1853–1925), the eponymous "Strümpell-Leichtenstern encephalitis" is named, a disease also known as acute hemorrhagic encephalitis.

Walter_Karl_Koch

Walter Eduard Carl Koch (3 May 1880 in Dortmund, Germany – 21 November 1962 in Gretesch) was a German pathologist best known for the discovery of Koch's triangle, a triangular shaped area in the right atrium of the heart.
Educated in Freiburg im Breisgau and at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy in Berlin, he obtained his doctorate in 1907 at Freiburg. As a military physician, he served at the pathological institute in Freiburg. Later on he worked in Berlin. Here he habilitated in general pathology and pathological anatomy in 1921. After being named a professor in 1922, he worked as head of department at Berlin's Westend hospital.

Bernhard_Kayser

Bernhard Kayser (6 August 1869, in Bremen – 11 May 1954, in Stuttgart) was a German ophthalmologist.
He studied at Tübingen and Berlin, receiving his doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1893. Afterwards, he worked as an intern in Tübingen and as an assistant physician in Freiburg im Breisgau. He was then employed as a ship's physician by the North German Lloyd Shipping Company and spent 2½ years in Brazil as a general practitioner. He later worked as a physician in Brandenburg and Bremen, during which time, he developed an interest in ophthalmology. In 1903 he became a specialist in ophthalmology and relocated to Stuttgart, where he spent the remainder of his life. For many years he was editor of the essay section of the Klinische Monatsblätter für Augenheilkunde.Kayser-Fleischer rings are named after him and Bruno Fleischer. Kayser described the condition in a 1902 paper titled Über einen Fall von angeborener grünlicher Verfärbung des Cornea.

Carl_Kaiserling

Johann Carl Kaiserling (3 February 1869 - 20 August 1942) was a German pathologist who was a native of Kassel-Wehlheiden.
He studied medicine in Munich, Kiel and Berlin, earning his medical doctorate in 1893. In 1902, he became privatdozent at the University of Berlin, and from 1912 was a professor of general pathology and pathological anatomy at the University of Königsberg.His name is associated with "Kaiserling's fixative", a means of preserving histologic and pathologic specimens without changing the natural color. This fixative is an aqueous solution of formalin, potassium nitrate and potassium acetate. Kaiserling is also known for his pioneer work in the field of photomicrography.
