Wilton Daniel Gregory (born December 7, 1947) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church who has been serving as the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington since 2019. Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal on November 28, 2020. He is the first African-American cardinal.Gregory previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago in Illinois from 1983 to 1994; as bishop of the Diocese of Belleville in Illinois, from 1994 to 2004; and as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta in Georgia from 2005 to 2019. He was the first Black president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). He served as president from 2001 to 2004, when the USCCB issued the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People" in response to the sexual abuse scandal in the US Catholic church.
