Utah State University (USU or Utah State) is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Logan, Utah. Originally founded in 1888, USU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity". Along with the University of Utah, Utah State is one of two flagship universities formally recognized by the state of Utah, and is the flagship for the Utah State University Statewide Campus System. As of Fall 2023, it had nearly 30,000 enrolled students, including 26,949 undergraduates and 3,019 graduate students. USU has more than 200,000 alumni located in all 50 states and more than 115 countries.Founded under the 1862 act as the state's land-grant university, Utah State's original charter focused on military science, technology, science, agriculture, and mechanics. By 1947, the military science program at Utah State had gained such prominence that USU came to be known as the "West Point of the West" as USU commissioned more officers into the U.S. military than any other school in the nation except for the United States Military Academy at West Point.According to the National Science Foundation, the university received $345 million in research and development funding in 2022, ranking it 83rd in the nation, and 54th in the nation among public institutions of higher education and learning. Utah State and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), form one of only fourteen University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC) of the United States Department of Defense; and, constitute the sole UARC for the Missile Defense Agency. Having completed over 450 successful space missions and sent over 500 payloads into space, Utah State leads all institutions of higher education in aerospace research and experiments sent to space; and, in 2021, received a $1 billion contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory, the largest contract ever of its kind.Also known for its undergraduate research, Utah State's undergraduate research program is one of the oldest in the country (second oldest in the nation); and, in 2021, was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Council for Undergraduate Research.USU's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Utah State Aggies. Utah State is a full member of the Mountain West Conference.
