Utah State University (USU or Utah State) is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Logan, Utah. Founded in 1888 as Utah's only land-grant research institution, Utah State is one of two flagship universities officially recognized by the state of Utah, and is the flagship for the Utah State University Statewide Campus System. USU is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity".Utah State's original charter focused on military science, technology, science, agriculture, and mechanical arts. By 1947, the military science program at Utah State had gained such prominence that USU became known as the "West Point of the West" since USU commissioned more officers into the U.S. military than any school in the nation excepting the United States Military Academy at West Point.Today, Utah State comprises 13 statewide campuses (including its main campus in Logan), 23 distance education centers, 6 research parks, 14 research farms, 30 county office locations, and over 50 research subsidiaries. Utah State and its subsidiary, Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), form one of only fourteen University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC) of the United States Department of Defense; and, constitute the sole UARC for the United States Missile Defense Agency. Utah State has completed over 450 successful space missions and leads all institutions of higher education globally in aerospace research and the total number of experiments sent to space. In 2021, Utah State received a $1 billion contract for aerospace research, including “space and nuclear advanced prototypes, experiments and technology,” from the Air Force Research Laboratory, the largest contract of its kind ever awarded.Utah State's undergraduate research program is one of the oldest in the country (i.e., the second oldest program after MIT); and, in 2021, was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the Council for Undergraduate Research.USU's athletic teams, the Utah State Aggies, compete in Division I as members of the Mountain West Conference. Utah State has nearly 30,000 currently enrolled students (with over 20,000 students living on or within one block its main campus in Logan) and more than 200,000 alumni located in all 50 states and more than 115 countries.
